If you are new to the fashion community, do NOT rush into a leather jacket thinking that just because you put one on it will give you instant social clout.Įvery leather company always makes jackets in a few different styles. Leather jackets are not to be taken lightly. Buy the thing you want."Īlso, a word of CAUTION to the novices: A leather jacket can be the fast lane to rockstar levels of cool, but can also be a fast route to potentially awkward looking. This is definitely one of those places where the rule should be "Don't buy something similar to the thing you want. If you really need to pick something up on the more budget friendly side, it's a much better idea to look for used or vintage items on ebay or buy/sell forums. Yes, you can find some really crappy companies selling for around $200 or $300, but I would generally avoid those because they use cheaper leather which will not last as long and they usually do not have a fitted cut. Make your decision wisely because this is an investment. An entire outfit can be built around a single statement piece like a leather jacket, even whole wardrobes.įor that reason, treat them as an investment piece. Because of their very nature, leather jackets are not an accessory, they are a statement or a lifestyle piece. For decades, these jackets have been a staple piece for every larger-than-life-baddass you can think of. No single item of clothing screams "Badass" like a leather jacket. To say a name is to give breath to a legacy, to carry the past into the present. Soon a video circulated of a white woman calling the cops on a Black birder in New York’s Central Park, bringing the outrage sparked by the murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd home to the birding community. Confined to my home, I logged eBird checklists of my backyard visitors while scrolling through my social media feeds, which were filled with scenes from racial-justice protests. I began to think more deeply about the names appended to the natural world as the pandemic wore on. I’d assumed Cooper’s Hawks might steal chickens from coops at night. I’d spent years believing Steller’s Jay was called “Stellar Jay” because its plumage looked like the night sky. As for other birds carrying people’s names, I’d misconstrued several to better suit my knowledge of the species. So the honorific became a passive marker for speaking of Wilson’s birds, but not for knowing them. Flipping through my field guide, I saw four more birds bore the same possessive title. Whoever Wilson was had no bearing on my understanding of my new feathered familiar, except that maybe the “O” in its name felt like a nod to its dark cap. A Wilson’s Warbler! I’d gleefully add this songbird to my checklist after the tiny floof flitted away into the brush. If I was lucky, a little bird would appear among the thickets long enough for me to count its field marks-nimble flight, yellow-green feathers, a perfect black oval on its crown. Songbirds and waterfowl seemed at home in a world awash in gold and I felt more attuned to their rhythms when we basked together in the last sliver of summer sunlight. I didn’t know what these plants were called, but I carefully and meticulously learned the names of all the birds I saw and heard. The verdant reeds and towering silver-barked trees glowed in the hours just before sunset. When pandemic lockdowns began, I took daily walks around a placid lagoon in a park in downtown Santa Cruz, California. There is something remarkable about looking for birds at last light. Plant flower bulbs beneath a wire or plastic screen ground cover or in bulb cages.Surround the area with a plant-free gravel border.Remove wood or rock piles and trim back plantings that provide cover or food sources around the area of concern.Use an L-shaped footer to keep them from burrowing around foundations, sidewalks, porches, and retaining walls. You can make changes to your yard to limit the effects of having chipmunks as wild neighbors: The pleasure they can give will outweigh any problems they may cause. If you have chipmunks in your yard, enjoy them. Taking advantage of that misconception, some wildlife control businesses will trap and kill chipmunks for a fee. Some people believe that chipmunk tunnels under walkways and in the yard truly cause damage. Close all doors leading into rooms and closets, open doors to the outside, and let her make her way to freedom. If you find a chipmunk indoors, she’s there by accident, and she’ll be glad to leave as soon as you provide a way to escape. But there are no documented cases of a chipmunk burrow causing structural damage. Occasionally chipmunks dig up and eat spring flowering bulbs and burrow in flower beds or under sidewalks and porches. Common conflicts and solutionsĬhipmunks don’t usually damage property, but they may injure ornamental plants when they harvest fruits and nuts. The pleasure that comes from having them around is great in comparison to any problems they may create. Although most commonly found in forests, chipmunks will also make their homes in yards, where you might see them in and around stone walls, under walkways or patios, or in gardens. Pen display - Probably what most people think of in terms of drawing tablets, these panels will let you see the tracks of your stylus or pen as you go.The movement of your stylus on the pad will be reflected on your computer screen. Graphics tablet - The simplest of the bunch, essentially a touch-sensitive pad with a pen that you can plug into your computer so you have more control over your cursor (and therefore your digital pen) while drawing. Most drawing tablets can be categorised into one of three types: graphics tablets, pen displays, and tablet computers: So a pen of some sort and an accompanying tablet are essential - but what should you consider when looking into which model to invest in? What kinds of tablets are there? Have you ever tried signing your name on a trackpad with your finger? If you find it difficult even to just replicate a signature you've written hundreds of times with a mouse or laptop trackpad, think of the pain it would be to attempt to do fine line work in the exact shapes and places you want. No matter which software you choose, you probably need some kind of a tablet and a digital pen. Different software will offer different mediums and editing options (Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop are always safe bets, but depending on what you want, there are alternatives that might be better suited). The physical tools, plus your software, will affect how well you're able to translate your drawing skills to the screen, or, if you're a total beginner, the control you have over your artistic process. So when you weigh a one-off investment that provides access to virtually any kind of creative medium (as well as the panacea that is the undo button) against the more exacting, prep-heavy work of physical drawing, there can be a real payoff. those all cost money, and can quickly be used up. And that's just with one medium - investing in oil paints, acrylic paints, watercolors, pastels, graphite pencils, charcoal. However, this is in contrast to the physical world, where even if you were to be more economical with paints or paper, the various drafts and ruined works that a simple mistake can result in really add up. Of course, the styluses and pads in question can cost quite a bit - and that's assuming you have a tablet or a laptop to use them with, if necessary. That flexibility, in addition to quick turnarounds and a digitised end product, is what makes digital art so appealing from a commercial perspective. Whole communities have grown around the digital art space - Deviantart, Pixiv, and, of course Tumblr.ĭigital tools allow artists to simulate a variety of mediums using the same tools: a stylus, a touch-sensitive pad, and some creative software like Adobe Fresco. Though there are debates over whether newfangled concepts can truly be considered works of art (we're talking about you, NFTs), it's undeniable that technology has made more traditional forms of art far more accessible.ĭigital art is also more convenient for employers, resulting in many professional graphic designers and illustrators being hired to do their work on a computer instead of on paper, which in turn influences the aesthetic of marketing and journalism alike. From 3D-printed sculptures to Photoshopped pictures, art is ever-evolving alongside our increasingly tech-savvy world. When you hear or read words such as “giga” as in gigabyte, “tera” as in terabyte, or “mega” perhaps in the form of megapixel or megajoule, each of these are metric prefixes. Each word has both a numerical value and symbol attached to it so that we can combine the symbol of the metric prefix with the symbol of the unit. The metric prefixes have been standardized to fit with the International System of Units. Within the metric system they indicate precisely what power of ten we multiply or divide a unit by to uniformly make the unit larger or smaller so that it applies more directly to the magnitude of the quantities being measured. This metric prefixes page is one of the least amusing on this website, although it does provide a lot of interesting material for quizzes and trivia puzzles.Metric prefixes are words attached to a given unit with the Metric System of the SI Units system which essentially change the scale of that unit. If in doubt it is important to clarify the local convention. the consequential intermediate steps in the long scale are named using 'ard' and ardth' suffixes, so for example a thousand millions is called a milliard. Long scale numbering beyond a million use the short scale numbers in steps of 1,000,000-times the previous number, so for example a billion is a million-millions. For example, a billion is a thousand-millions. Beyond a million, short scale numbers are named in steps of 1,000-times the previous number. 'Short scale' number names are used in mainland Europe and other non-English-speaking nations. Generally 'long scale' names of numbers are used in UK/US/Arabic-English-speaking nations. A billion does not mean the same number to everyone. Short scale and long scale big number names The metric prefixes offer a simple and quick way to introduce the main principles of decimals and big number calculations, as well as providing a meaningful reference by which to explore or teach most other aspects of mathematics. To progress your career into management or other higher responsibility, or to start up and run your own business, a good understanding of mathematics is crucial - especially being capable with big numbers, and being sure where to put the decimal point in monetary calculations, where failing to do so can cause disastrous errors. We all need to understand numbers and maths to a level necessary for even the most basic tasks, such as balancing personal finances, completing expenses claims or tax returns, and assessing the best deals when we do our grocery shopping. Numbers and mathematics are fascinating and useful in work and life. You and your students/trainees will no doubt think of plenty more examples. The words decimate and centurion from Roman times Trillion (tn) as an increasingly used measure of monetary budget or debt or output of government and economy (fast-eclipsing the scale of billions and millions, which were once beyond imagination but are now are dwarfed by the extent of modern national and international finances) Micro-organisms, microwaves, micron, micrometer (although note that 'micro' also has the general meaning of small, from the Greek 'mikros') Gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes in computing Here are some other common random words which include metric prefix words, which are interesting discussion points if you seek to explore numbers yourself, or especially if you are attempting to make the subject appealing and accessible to young people or trainees of others sorts. about a billion passed while you are reading this sentence. How quick is a nanosecond? A blink of an eye?Ī bit quicker. a microgram is actually just one-millionth of a gram. How heavy is a microgram? Could you feel a microgram in the palm of your hand? The metric prefixes help us to appreciate measurements and sizes much more accurately: for example: (10 to the power of three is ten multiplied by itself three times = 1,000. In the metric prefixes table below, 'Factor' equates to the ten-times factor the positive ones represent the number of zeros after the figure the negatives show the number of decimal places after the decimal point. Knowing the actual values of the metric prefixes enables us to have a better understanding of the terms which use them, and the real size of things that are described by them. The metric prefixes have entered many parts of our language and terminology, especially measurements and performance data of very big and very small things (gigabyte, microgram, nanosecond, etc). Metric prefixes: definitions, values and symbols With the continuation of the story, we also introduce new enemy ships, like the Okkar Clerical Corvette and the Okkar Prime units. As many of you might recall, Adam now has to prevent a computer virus from spreading all over the DMZ that he has accidentally unleashed, so he’ll need help from his new, dubious hacker friend, Fallon Pango. We also added the 2nd part of the multi-stage side mission Parasite. I would have kept playing if there was more story to be discovered. Freelancer was pretty damn flawed as well, after all. Sounds pretty negative I guess, but don't let that stop you from trying it out. Or at least went with a different implementation. Kind of wish the devs hadn't gone the looter shooter route. I'm going to wait until they've added more content and worked on the systems a bit before playing this again. So none of that fighters handling like atmospheric craft bs ala star wars or starlancer etc. On the upside you do get newtonian flight with inertial dampeners off, and it's 6 axis flight in general. Ship and special equipment balance is pretty skewed right now, and the regular weapons don't seem all that exciting tbh. Point cost for stat upgrades increases each time you upgrade the same stat and the upgrade item was fairly rare. You can augment them a little bit with some extra item (gotta stack 3 of these for an upgrade point). You get a sort of unlock point for special modes/modifiers of special equipment, but all of the current ships only carry a max of 2 of these, and only one mode each can be active at the same time. There is too little happening with each level up. Maybe randomly generated missions level with you? Didn't check. Level limit is 14 right now, which I reached in 9-10 hours maybe? Enemies are also levelled, but most areas/missions seem to have a fixed level. All the weapons are the same from beginning of the game to the (current) end, just that stats and some bonus stuff change. Keep in mind that it's basically a looter shooter. Cutscenes right now are still WIP, especially later on as it's just a woman narrating what I guess is the story board. They do kind of an interesting thing where they have some puzzles of sorts in the game. Their suggestion to switch to dx11 didn't change anything for me.Ĭurrently there is only a short introduction (idk how long, but nowhere near the 20 hours I've seen mentioned, I played through it all in 12.1 hours according to steam and that's with some idle time and doing too much randomized content) to the story campaign and a bunch of side stuff. If I go into the menu where you change your input bindings it suddenly goes down to the 30's lol) on top end rigs as well. It runs awkwardly (some scenes fps in the low hundreds, some in the 40s. In search of a powerful language translator? The opposing forces will be brigade combat teams, or more likely, battalion-sized elements.ĭupuy did not have as much data on tank combat at this level, and what he did have indicated a great deal more variability in loss rates. One guess that is reasonably certain is that future tank battles will probably not involve forces of World War II division or corps size. What does this tell us about possible tank losses in future combat? That is a very good question. Armor supporting units suffered lower tank casualty rates than armor heavy units.ĭupuy looked at tank loss rates in the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and found that they were consistent with World War II experience. Units with fewer than six tanks per 1,000 troops could be considered armor supporting, while those with a density of more than six tanks per 1,000 troops were armor-heavy. Additionally, defending units suffered lower loss rates than attackers if an attacking force suffered a tank losses seven times the personnel rate, the defending forces tank losses would be around five times.ĭupuy also discovered the ratio of tank to personnel losses appeared to be a function of the proportion of tanks to infantry in a combat force. In combat between two division/corps-sized, armor-heavy forces, Dupuy found that the tank loss rates were likely to be between five to seven times the personnel casualty rate for the winning side, and seven to 10 for the losing side. (His combat attrition verities are discussed here.) Looking at World War II division and corps-level combat engagement data in 1943-1944 between U.S., British and German forces in the west, and German and Soviet forces in the east, Dupuy found similar patterns in tank loss rates. In general, Dupuy identified that a proportional relationship exists between personnel casualty rates in combat and losses in tanks, guns, trucks, and other equipment. Today, I will take a look at his analysis of historical tank loss rates. In a previous post, I looked at the analysis done by Trevor Dupuy on the relationship between tank and personnel losses in the U.S. One aspect of future battle of great interest to military planners is probably going to tank loss rates in combat. Will technological advances change the character of armored warfare? Perhaps, but it seems more likely that the next big tank battles – if they occur – will likely resemble those from the past. Army and the national security community seek a sense of what potential conflicts in the near future might be like, they see the distinct potential for large tank battles. The concentric rings are designated from the center out as "A" through "E" (with additional "F" and "G" rings in the basement). The south parking lot adjoins the southwest façade, and the west side of the Pentagon faces Washington Boulevard. There is also a concourse on the southeast side of the second floor of the building, which contains a mini-shopping mall. The main entrance for visitors is on the southeast side, as are the Pentagon Metro station and the bus station. A stepped terrace on the River Entrance leads down to the lagoon and a landing dock was used until the late 1960s to ferry personnel between Bolling Air Force Base and the Pentagon. The River Entrance, which features a portico projecting out twenty ft (6 m), is on the northeast side, overlooking the lagoon and facing Washington. On the north side of the building, the Mall Entrance, which also features a portico, leads out to a 600 ft-long (180 m) terrace that is used for ceremonies. Starting with the north side and moving clockwise, its five façade entrances are the Mall Terrace, the River Terrace, the Concourse (or Metro Station), the South Parking, and the Heliport. The Pentagon building spans 28.7 acres (116,000 m 2), and includes an additional 5.1 acres (21,000 m 2) as a central courtyard. An outdoor memorial dedicated to the Pentagon victims of 9/11 opened in 2008. Following the attacks, the western side of the building was repaired, with a small indoor memorial and chapel added at the point of impact. It was the first significant foreign attack on Washington's governmental facilities since the city was burned by the British during the War of 1812. Five al-Qaeda hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the western side of the building, killing themselves and 184 others: 59 on the airplane and 125 in the Pentagon. In 2001, the Pentagon was damaged during the September 11 attacks. The central five-acre (2.0 ha) pentagonal plaza is nicknamed " ground zero" on the presumption that it would be a prime target in a nuclear war. It has five sides, five floors above ground, two basement levels, and five ring corridors per floor with a total of 17.5 mi (28.2 km) of corridors. Some 23,000 military and civilian employees, and another 3,000 non-defense support personnel, work in the Pentagon. The Pentagon is the world's largest office building, with about 6.5 million square feet (150 acres 60 ha) of floor space, of which 3.7 million square feet (85 acres 34 ha) are used as offices. Army Corps of Engineers, which supervised it. General Brehon Somervell provided the major impetus to gain Congressional approval for the project Colonel Leslie Groves was responsible for overseeing the project for the U.S. Ground was broken on 11 September 1941, and the building was dedicated on 15 January 1943. Located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., the building was designed by American architect George Bergstrom and built by contractor John McShain. military, the phrase The Pentagon is often used as a metonym for the Department of Defense and its leadership.
